When You Need a Permit for Your Dumpster
Whether or not you need a dumpster permit depends on where you plan on having your dumpster placed.
Dumpster permits are typically only required if you are placing a dumpster on a:
- Residential street.
- Sidewalk or walkway.
- Form of public property.
A residential driveway, which is the most common dumpster placement, does not typically require a permit. Steps to Obtaining a Dumpster Permit
The requirements for placing a dumpster on public property vary between cities. In some cities, the responsibility for obtaining a permit is on the individual hauler, in which case you won't have to apply for your own permit.
To find out if your location requires a dumpster rental permit, and how to apply, follow the steps below or give us a call and we'll be able to check for you.
Step 1: Check If Your Location Requires a Street or Dumpster Permit
Give us a call at 408-872-2385 and a service representative will be able to tell you whether or not you need a dumpster rental permit before setting up your order.
Step 2: Contact Your Local Public Works Department/HOA
Your city's public works or building department is responsible for building inspections, enforcing construction codes and issuing permits. Once you get in touch with them they will provide you with the appropriate application form. Simply fill out the provided form and submit it to the department. This process can usually be done in person, over the phone or online.
Processing times can vary between cities, though most applications should be approved within 24 hours. Fees for dumpster permits also vary depending on the type of project and the length of time the dumpster will occupy the street. If you are placing the dumpster outside of your home, contact your local HOA to make sure there are no bylaws restricting the placement of a dumpster on your street.
Step 3: Schedule Your Dumpster Delivery
Once you’re fully “permitted" just let us know and we’ll schedule your dumpster rental for you.
